"The Shadows of Sunset" by San Jaya Prime & DJ Chad Is a DJ

The Shadows of Sunset

Introductions are in order. However, this poses a rather annoying conundrum. You see, even with a decade of history, we're faced with the fact that almost ALL of that history gets filed under either "illegal" or "crazy" (if not both). Like the time that Chad was drugged and Jaya was haggling with a woman over how much he'd sell his friend for. You see, that didn't happen... 'cuz that'd be human trafficking. Besides, Chad's worth more than a few hundred pesos. It should be noted that, even though this event never happened, Chad was more than a little displeased once he found out who the woman was that was trying to buy him. Good thing it didn't happen... 'cuz then this little EP here wouldn't have happened.

So, instead of going with a story that'd get filed under "illegal", let's go with one of the more popular "crazy" stories. Jaya and Chad had hitchhiked into Mexico in search of one of the last demons of the Three Moons. As with any sanctioned undertaking along these lines, it's common to ask for something in return. The two of them each asked for one easy item... and one hard. They threw in a fifth item that they both agreed on. Upon seeing the "hard item" that Chad had written down, Jaya told him to be more realistic.

"What?! You said something hard, and I wanna see 'Big Trouble in Little China' when we're in Mexico."

Having been to Mexico before, Jaya knew that finding movies could be hard... especially when the only cash you've got isn't even enough to afford hotels. Chad wasn't budging, so they continued on their path with one of the more crazy items ever asked of the Greater Forces of this world. One by one, each item got checked off the list, until only "Big Trouble" remained. Pyramids came and went, there was a demon along the way, some bartering with cartels and a complete mental breakdown. Fortunately, they were comforted by food parasites and sun burns... mostly just Chad, actually.

Confident that the last item wasn't getting checked off the list, the two began to hitchhike north outta the Yucatan. Pooling the last of their spare pesos, they decided that beer was the best way to celebrate the victories along the way. As Jaya sprawled in a corner of the bar, Chad went and rounded up two cold cervezas. When he turned from the bar, Chad froze... staring just above Jaya. There, playing on the television in the corner, was "Big Trouble in Little China". Laughing, the two took a seat in front o' the tele and drank their cold victory in stunned silence.

"Next time", Jaya said, "we're fucking asking for a million dollars."

...and we won't even mention The Happy FunPak. The Happy FunPak... doesn't exist.

With Love & Gratitude

¤ To the entire Rambo-Fuccello Family, who ran a rescue mission to pick up two errant hitchhikers who'd weathered one of the more impressive hail storms that South Texas has ever been witness to. Also, when the cartel was holding Chad hostage, Karen's the one who wired funds for us to pay 'em off. It should be noted that the "hostage" part was Chad's idea--not the cartel's--and that we've got nothin' but love for the cartel.

¤ To Mimi, who nursed our busted gringo asses back to health... feasting and sheltering us without asking anything in return. But Jack... Jack gets no thanks whatsoever (I know you're reading this, you beady-eyed little devil).

¤ To fucking Pops, who hardened both of us back into some semblance of working humans (and using only alcohol and a machine shed to do it). We still owe you Tequila shots in Guadalajara and a night out in Spain. We haven't forgotten!

¤ To the hundreds of peeps from around the world, and from many different religions, who held us in their heart at a very critical moment. It was fucking felt. Fucking THANK YOU! Never seen the universe bend in such an absurd way. Again... this EP could've easily never happened.

¤ To Tricky Fish, who's camera (yet again) helped put an album together.

In this case, "EP" has multiple meanings... not just for "extended play", but as an extended project as well. Long-time listeners have already heard early versions of these tracks from as far back as late 2009. There are plenty of more on the way, including the "No ID" versus "2TL" mix that a few have heard previews of. To stay tuned to the project, you can either bookmark [this link] or begin following DJ Chad Is a DJ [Here on SoundCloud] or [Here on Facebook].

Sigil In summary, this is a mess of extra-terrestrially oriented electro, with explicit musings on phenomena from across a wide range of anomalistics. Welcome to the popgun steam-tart world of lectrokicko. Quick changeups, random musings and as much "not boring" as we could muster. In the end, we aim to entertain.

Chad wanted to create a new sub-genre called "lectrokicko", and the music behind "Shadows" is what Jaya came up with. Make of it what you will. This is one of the largest collaborations that members from the rogue art gang The Happy FunPak have ever taken on... but we don't talk about that gang... there'z teachers watching. Nonetheless, it comes with the disclaimer that punk kid criminals working together on a project should be taken with a few grains of salt, a lime 'n some tequila shots. You get the gist.

In terms of the "IO" series, this EP is even more disconnected from the main storyline than most of the EPs. That's right peeps, it's the house party at the end of the world. Opening with the epilogue to "Ghosts of Blood and Oil", the world is literally bursting into nuclear light and going dark... one country at a time. A pirate broadcast catches the ears of the few that haven't already taken to the streets in hysteria, announcing that they'll be partying until the world ends... and announcing that the mothership should be landing any time now to pick up anyone who's ready to skip town on apocalypse city.

Track Notes: "Ghosts of Blood and Oil" comes to a close, marking the end of human history as a civilization. Jumping almost right into the synthpop acid lines from the original "Ghosts of Blood and Oil", the strings from the ouverture quickly join it. At the crescendo, the acid line turns into a filtered bass groove behind the strings. The static builds until the break at the ending, with the tones from a music box closing the track on a bittersweet note.... as the Book of Man is closed... and as the Book of the Machine turns to the next chapter. Look for the final epilogue--the closing of "Party at Arizona Bay"--on the final "IO" EP in 2012.

It's got four beats that go over and over again... forever... forever. And it's got a hi-hat... it's got a hi-hat. And, if you're lucky--which you are, because I am DJ Chad Is a DJ--I might even put a couple of echoes. It may be the greatest house song ever made by anybody ever, except for me, because I am DJ Chad Is a DJ. And that's what I do best! Is make house songs for you! 'Cuz that's what you like! I'm gonna leave you alone for a minute and let you enjoy how fucking awesome my god-damned house music is. [pause] Are you in total ecstasy yet? You should be, 'cuz that's what this was designed to make you do: be in total ecstasy... ecstasy... ex. You think about that. Can you even think when you're in total ecstasy? I'm gonna stop this now. I'm gonna stop this song for you. I know, don't cry... don't cry...

Production/Vox: DJ Chad Is a DJ; Remixing: San Jaya Prime; Mastering: BMFD; More Vox: Savannah Fuccello

Track Notes: The title says a lot about this track, as this is quite literally going on inside of Chad's house... as well as Chad's head... and it is, afterall, a house track. Jaya pumped out the first remix of this track just twenty-four hours after hearing the original... although the first hour or so was spent laughing instead of mixing. The remix that made the album saves the humor for the lyrics, while playing hardass with the music.

03. San Jaya Prime - Anomalistics; or, U Kant Spel Psychadelic w-o Chad (feat. DJ Chad Is a DJ)

Download: LoFi 160kbps MP3 /// HiFi 320kbps MP3 /// Lossless Quality /// Lossless Quality /// LyricsFor the past ten fucking years I've been filling up these little black books with quotes pertaining to things that I had some special interest in. Then, over the next couple years, I started to learn what it was that I had a special interest in, and it was anomalistics. There's such a rich, rich anomalous history in this world that people don't give themselves over to because classic empiricist reasoning demands that they not. I hated the fact that science approached things the way that it did, with just this cold, hard calloused empirical reasoning: I can smell it, I can see it, I can taste it. There are fringe aspects of science--metaphysics, parapsychology--but everything else kinda really tends to dwell in the shadows or in the fringe areas, you know, and that's where T.V. picks it up.

Production: San Jaya Prime; Vox: DJ Chad Is a DJ; Mastering: BMFD

Track Notes: Anomalistics is the scientific approach to understanding unexplained phenomena. Where technological measurements fail to account for an observed phenomenon, the mind is left to rationalization... or, in the case of television, this leaves a gap for sensationalization. For the track as a whole, the lyrics take the scientific route while the music goes with televised sensationalism. The "You Can't Spell Psychadelic Without Chad" part of the title comes in thanks to Tristan Skybreak, who noted that a search in iTunes for "Chad" pulled up tracks that had misspelled "psychedelic" as "psychadelic". Applicable? Definitely.

04. San Jaya Prime - Grey's the New Pink (feat. DJ Chad Is a DJ)

Download: LoFi 160kbps MP3 /// HiFi 320kbps MP3 /// Lossless Quality /// LyricsLet's start with the first appearance of the grey alien. Betty and Barney Hill, they were an inner-racial married couple. They were driving home one night; they saw a bright light; they sat back in their cars; they looked at their clocks, and they'd left at eleven o'clock and it was five o'clock in the morning. So they went home, and years passed, but they started suffering from really weird neurosis--really weird things--so they went to see a shrink and the shrink suggested hypnosis. They both gave precisely the exact same account of what had gone on during that missing time. The only problem was that one of the two saw these trollish creatures doing the exact same thing that this guy thought that they were doing to him. This guy, though, saw small, diminutive, grey, wrap-around black almond-eyed creatures. So, they were perceiving the same event, but with little flourishes, which means that--whatever's happening here--is happening "from within us". And, you know, people just automatically... "I don't believe in extraterrestrials", or, you know, "I don't believe in... in fucking tectonic plate differentials", "I don't believe in 'sky beasts'", "I don't believe in extra dimensions", "I don't believe in...". It doesn't their world view. They're the center. But these things are happening to those kinds of people.

Production: San Jaya Prime; Vox: DJ Chad Is a DJ; Mastering: BMFD

Track Notes: This is one of the key messages on the EP, detailing how the "anomalies" are viewed differently. The actions they take during contact are not observed differently, only the anomalies. What changes how they are viewed? The only constant is the cultural coding that defines the mind of the observer. Musically, this is one of the more three-dimensionally rich tracks on the EP... and a remix is already on the way.

Download: LoFi 160kbps MP3 /// HiFi 320kbps MP3 /// Lossless Quality /// LyricsSomething crashed outside of the desert in Roswell, New Mexico. There were a lot of people who said that there was a god-damned meteor or something that fell to a ranch just north of Roswell. The first people there to see it were a team of archaeologists. They were walking up and down a place called The North Road. And they saw this craft, and its wreckage, and its remains. There were bodies--one in, two outside; one struggling to breath. Some of the debris they picked up was weird stuff. Super tenacity, tin foil that you could fold into the cusp of your hand and let go, and it would just bounce out like a sheet... no wrinkles, no nothing. Glass pipes that reflected light of all different colors. Strange, strange, strange, strange things... very, very, very weird, weird things. Roswell Air Force Base, they said: "Yeah, we got a flying saucer." And then, the next day... the next day they printed a retraction and said: "No, it was a weather balloon." Okay, well, that's fine... show us the weather balloon... and they showed us the weather balloon. You know the picture of the dude standing over the weather balloon holding the piece of paper? Well, recently they did a computer enhancement of the piece of paper that he was holding, and here's what it says on that piece of paper: "AS THE [...] 4 HRS THE VICTIMS OF THE [...] YOU FORWARDED TO THE [...] AT FORT WORTH, TEX. [...] THE "CRASH" "STORY" [...] FOR 0984 ACKNOWLEDGES [...] EMERGENCY POWERS ARE NEEDED SITE TWO SW MAGDALENA, NMEX [...] SAFE TALK [...] FOR MEANING OF STORY AND MISSION [...] WEATHER BALLOONS SENT ON THE [...] AND LAND [...] ROVER CREWS[...] TEMPLE" (Ron Regehr and James Bond Johnson, 1998)

Production: San Jaya Prime; Vox: DJ Chad Is a DJ; Mastering: BMFD

Track Notes: Roswell was almost a forgotten "incident", then revived by ufologists in the 70s. Since then, it has only provided more and more insight into the "anomalies" and their technology, as well as the workings of governments in response to these anomalies. The music is all over the place, with chiptune textures, filtered instruments and even a hip-hop acid line to close it out. It's "catchy".

At the ends of them, sometimes the leaves will be de-interlaced, and then de-interlaced down and de-interlaced down into a braid. They say it was done within twenty- to thirty-seconds. And they actually did some mathematical studies into the shapes. It was non-Euclidean geometry. It was a theorem that was to be solved, and this guy solved the theorem, and it was a strange octave of notes. You're spelling out this theorem and it's like, "How do dimensions work?" Well, they operate on much the same scale as a musical octave. Often, whenever there's a crop circle, a UFO is seen either prior to or after the event. Cattle mutilation? Always... usually... that's a weasel-word. I don't wanna say "always usually". Generally speaking--if there's a cattle mutilation--sometime the night before, or in that week, there's sightings of a craft. But, abduction phenomena, always there will be a craft. Our governments been duped into admit how far they've been duped by powers that would make an extra-terrestrial look like a gummy worm.

Production: San Jaya Prime; Vox: DJ Chad Is a DJ; Mastering: BMFD

Track Notes: Peeps who heard early previews almost all agreed: "This tune's too pop-ish." It still is... but it fits the theme well. Gerald Hawkins, a former Chairmen for Boston University's astronomy department, is the peep discovered the diatonic ratios hidden in crop circles... leading to whole-number ratios used in scales of musical notes [link]. This is the first proven account (ever!) of geometric theorems being tied in with musical theory.

Download: LoFi 160kbps MP3 /// HiFi 320kbps MP3 /// Lossless Quality /// LyricsYou know, the thing about UFO abduction experiences is they all follow along the same archetypal pattern. You're taken from your car or from your bed. You'll be approached by beings, and the descriptions of these beings vary. Maybe there are lights. They'll perform experiments on 'em. The main things that they did was put needles into womens' stomachs and removed eggs. Men, there was a big drive to get sperm samples. You know, they focused on the eyes... disconnect the eyes and then re-apply the eyes. And sometimes there would be these weird little things left behind. But, whenever they took those little things to laboratories, they were weird, and they didn't belong in the human body, but they weren't composed of any miraculous metals that our brilliant physicists haven't found already. Then you have the cattle mutilation. These cattle were fucking mutilated. Like, I am going to cut out the liver before I've even cut open any skin, I'm gonna move the liver to this one part of the body, I'm gonna contain all the blood here with a coagulant... without even making any incisions in the body, make one tiny hole... suck everything out. The things that they primarily took were the reproductive organs, the sensory organs, and that's it. People didn't understand what was going on.

Production: San Jaya Prime; Vox: DJ Chad Is a DJ; Mastering: BMFD

Track Notes: The message here is critical for building up to the next track, detailing the connection between abductions and cattle mutilations. These patterns repeat themselves with very few changes... and they're much older than the UFO anomaly. Don't ask about the music. It's production title was "more kandy", which says pretty much everything.

Download: LoFi 160kbps MP3 /// HiFi 320kbps MP3 /// Lossless Quality /// LyricsTrolls, goblins, elves--every fucking last one of these little peoples that lived either in caves; or on hillsides; or in deep, deep parts of the forest. You don't wanna go there, because the same fucking thing will happen to you back then as it would if you were taken into a craft. The things that these little fuckers did were abominable. They didn't take you up into a craft, rather they lived, instead, on dales and in mounds. And if a human being were to somehow pass thru one of these mounds, then that person would be subject to the laws of that particular anomalies universe. It means that you can sit and stare at someone, 'n even though you can see them, they can't see you. You'll sit down, and you'll stand up, and you'll be able to walk out. And then you go back to the house and they go: "Where have you been?" "I... I just got back from the mound." "You've been gone for three and a half months!" These faeries would often abduct people and perform experiments on them, focusing mainly on the ovum of the woman and the sperm of the male. The things that these faeries did to animals very, very closely resembled the cattle mutilations that you're seeing today. Fairy-rings! They were just as amazing as the crop circles today. Now, how much of this can you believe? How much of this is fact? How much of this is just pure, pure, pure fantasy?

Production: San Jaya Prime; Vox: DJ Chad Is a DJ; Mastering: BMFD

Track Notes: If you expect faeries to grant wishes, then you haven't actually read any of the original fairy-tales. They abducted people, performed experiments on them, mutilated animals and formed forest crop circles called "fairy-rings". Their "crafts" were on mounds, or in deep parts of the forest, or in caverns. Trolls became goblins, goblins became faeries, faeries became... chupacabra! Musically, this is a 3-D cloud of samples: FSKs, trolls grunting, wind blowing, etc.

On the thoughts of a single person, it's gonna be rocky, it's gonna be tumultuous, it's gonna be volcanoes spewing lava... terrible, terrible, terrible... not a very nice place to habitat. If you blend three people together, and if you create a culture where ideas are common--where themes are shared, despite the living or the passing of even the most despicable human--then you're going to have what can only be described as a "landscape". Our goddess worship, or god worship, our deities, our trickster gods, our kings, our queens, our jokers. They create this beautiful, beautiful, beautiful rocky landscape of our shared culture--our shared worldwide culture--and it's timeless. It has no time! The only time that it has is measured by when one of its constituents comes or passes away. Consider these anomalies, and where they're coming from, and how truly psycho-social they are. If something from "beyond" tries to get our attention, it's not gonna feel pleasant... at all, in any way, whatsoever. Say there is some creature living on this landscape, and if it needed to be fed, well what the fuck do you think it's gonna eat? It's gonna eat... whatever it can.

Production: San Jaya Prime; Vox: DJ Chad Is a DJ; Mastering: BMFD

Track Notes: ...and here we come to The Landscape itself. The cultures of the world have been connected by the Information Age, changing the very landscape of the collective unconscious itself... merging and blending them... until they've become "grey". But the landscape hasn't changed. The only thing that's changed is how we "view" it... and how we view the creature-archetypes that live on this landscape... and that live within us. Maybe about our past, maybe about who we were, so that we could possible understand who "they" are. Zombie Apocalypse. Zombies do actually exist. You know where we got all that from? They kinda perverted it in Haiti, but this went back to a West African tradition where their god was called Nzambi. This religion is THE oldest living religion on the face of this fucking planet. There's a story about this old lady going to this African town. She's gettin' help from no one. She's leprous, she's got shit all over her face, no one wants to fuckin' let her in. 'Til this young married couple sees her, and they're like, "Hey, come on in, relax... rest them old feet of yours." This woman, just totally overcome with graciousness for this couple, said: "I'm gonna reveal myself to you now. My name is actually Nzambi. Tomorrow, there's gonna come a great flood, and it's gonna wipe out all of these fuckin' idolaters... every last fuckin' one of 'em. But you, you're gonna build a boat... and it's gonna take you to the top of the Mountain of Heaven." The similarities here are striking. We're gonna be punished with a flood of zombies. Like, it's happening, you know. It's coming to the time where something's changing... something's going on. These little pieces of everything are slowly starting to come together, and I think we're reaching an equilibrium. And I'm not gonna tell you how it all boils down in my opinion, 'cuz I think it's kinda... poppycock.

Production: San Jaya Prime; Vox: DJ Chad Is a DJ; Mastering: BMFD

Track Notes: This track is a remix of the original "Escape from Hunahpu", released thru Peppermill Records as a part of their "2999" project. The original is far more heavy on the bass, and has a much larger audio range. It's also lyric-free and comes with an incredible illustration by Tim Luncsford. This version is more centered on the lyrics, a point where Jaya and Chad differ... the Zombie Apocalypse. To Jaya's discredit, he hasn't actually researched Nzambi... nor the religion that her children practice to this very day. A flood of zombies is as good a way as any to wrap up an album.

San Jaya PrimeSan Jaya Prime is a hitchhiker, a DJ and a writer. In his spare time, he masquerades as a brat, a holyman and a damned fool. Although landlocked in Austin until spring of 2012, he'll be hitching around the States one last time that year before leaving them. In his own words: "Sleep is the enemy!"

News from the Extended Project

[2011.04.04] - Look up. Look inside. Look around you.

[2011.02.18] - DJ Chad Is a DJ is now on Amazon dot Com. If you have an account, be sure to leave a review! We pay in cookies and motor oil [note: amenities may or may not be included].

[2011.02.02] - Chalkboard notes and drawings added to main site. Tags updated on all files on BandCamp, SoundCloud 'n the Main Site. Links updated and small formatting tweaks. It's cold. No. It's not cold. It's freezing. I ask the greater forces for forgiveness in the hopes that they will not freeze me to death for an unknown (but assuredly guilty) mis-step of mine... and I'm sleep-deprived... again.

[2011.01.31] - "The Shadows of Sunset" EP is live, available on the main site, as well as [Here on SoundCloud] and [Here on BandCamp]. New album art, tracks, notes and remixes are all planned for future release as part of the extended project.

What's Better than Crazy? MORE Crazy!

Both of the loonies behind this project are writers... and they'll eventually have a book ready that covers some of their adventures together. Jaya, under the pen name Kantiki Jayamana Whateva, has already started work on his first book about hitchhiking. It's three-fifths the way to the finish line as of February, 2011. You can check out the site for the book over on Landlore dot Net. Chad posts random bits of interest pertaining to various phenomena over on The Happy Fun Pak (aka, "Zombie/Sex Narcotic/Love & Terra Incognita").

Donations & VIP Tracks

As always, some tracks are reserved specifically for donors. Organ donors, peeps who donate time, sexua... er... donors. You know who you are. You don't need PayPal to donate. If you don't have PayPal, just click on the button below and look in the lower-left. There'll be a link to donate without using PayPal. If you donated from BandCamp, then send us an email. Use the same email you donated with, so that we can hunt you down and verify ya. That didn't come out right. Whatever. We'll hook you up with the VIP link. BTW, we're running completely without a subwoofer at the moment. If you have a working sub you wanna donate (and you're in Austin, TX), then send us an email. Neither of us have wheels, but we get around... and working without a sub has been a rather large annoyance. Anywho, give that little button there a clicksies. We love you long time.
